Georgia Voter Suppression A Warning to Country
Springfield, IL – Yesterday, Georgia Republican’s passed and signed into law sweeping legislation that restricts access to voting. Today, President Kristina Zahorik of the Illinois Democratic County Chairs’ Association (IDCCA) released the following statement:
“Republicans do not want people to be able to vote. Democrats want everyone eligible to vote. Period. Donald Trump and Georgia Republicans lost in 2020, and now they are passing laws that will disproportionately impact black and brown voters, along with poor people. What we are seeing today is a repeat of the opposition to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. It’s shameful, and it’s racist.”
“Yesterday, while Georgia Republicans were trying to take away individuals’ right to vote, Illinois Democrats passed HB1871 to ensure that everyone who wants to exercise their right to vote can do so safely and securely. Illinois is fortunate to have leaders like Governor Pritzker, Senate President Harmon, Speaker Chris Welch, and a Democratic Congressional Delegation who believe voting is a right that should be easy and accessible. We applaud them for pushing to keep voting fair, secure, and accessible in Illinois, and for fighting in Washington to protect those rights for everyone in this country.”
Illinois saw record breaking early voting and mail voting in 2020 thanks in part to state laws that expanded access to vote by mail, provided for automatic voter registration, and also permits same day voting and voter registration.
