IDCCA APPLAUDS GENERAL ASSEMBLY’S PASSAGE OF MINIMUM WAGE PLAN
Kristina Zahorik, president of the Illinois Democratic County Chairs’ Association (IDCCA), is celebrating the Illinois House’s approval of a $15.00/hour minimum wage in Illinois. After passing the Illinois Senate last week, the Illinois House of Representatives today followed suit, approving Senate Bill 1, a core initiative of Governor J.B. Pritzker’s 2018 campaign.
The following statement can be attributed to IDCCA President Kristina Zahorik:
“During the campaign, Democrats in every corner of the state pledged to seek a new level of dignity for low wage workers. From home health care attendants to long-time office workers, the minimum wage rate is outdated and does not allow these families to make ends meet – regardless of what region of the state they reside. The steady boost to $15.00 per hour is a meaningful step forward for scores of full-time workers who’ve not experienced the prosperity of a growing economy.
Governor Pritzker, Senate Majority Leader Kimberly Lightford and State Representative Will Guzzardi deserve credit for shepherding this proposal through the legislature so quickly. Their tireless negotiations and compromise will, undoubtedly, make a dramatic difference in the lives of millions of Illinois citizens.
While it’s unfortunate not a single Republican voted to increase the minimum wage, I’m grateful Illinois Democrats stood up today for working families, families that Republicans refused to help.
Governor Pritzker is expected to sign SB 1 quickly.
