Over the past several months I have been sickened every time I hear a story about sexual harassment within campaigns or political organizations. Brave women have started speaking out about their experiences and I’m thankful that they have brought this issue to the forefront of Democratic politics in our state. The type of behavior that these women experienced is unacceptable and the culture that has allowed it to happen needs to end immediately.
This past December I called for the creation of a Sexual Harassment Task Force within the Illinois Democratic County Chairs’ Association. In short order, this Task Force recommended that our organization change our name and that legislation be proposed to change the Election Code to reflect Chairperson / Committeeperson instead of the current language. Our Task Force, with the approval of the IDCCA Executive Board, has submitted a policy and pledge for all Democratic campaigns to follow to ensure a sexual harassment free workplace. This policy / pledge will apply to candidates, campaign staff, consultants, volunteers and interns.
I would like to encourage you to review and agree to follow the included policy / pledge. This will be a big step forward for Democratic candidates to help end this culture of sexual harassment and create a safe environment for everyone to work in Democratic politics.
Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about this policy and pledge.
