GOVERNOR RAUNER SHOWS A FAILURE TO LEAD BY DECLARING
IMPASSE WITH ASFCME

Springfield, IL – For over six months the Rauner Administration and ASFCME Council 31 have been negotiating on a contract that would be fair for everyone involved. That changed last Friday when Governor Rauner failed Illinois by walking away from the negotiating table. Per a statement from ASFCME Council 31 Executive Director Roberta Lynch, at the end of negotiations last Friday the Rauner Administration declared an impasse and is refusing to negotiate further.

The Illinois Democratic County Chairmen’s Association stands with ASFCME Council 31 and all State of Illinois employees. IDCCA President Doug House said “Governor Rauner once again has failed the State of Illinois. His declaration of an impasse with ASFCME Council 31 shows that, much like a child, it is either his way or no way at all. This is not the leadership that Illinois needs right now and it certainly not a good faith effort.”

Since taking office Governor Rauner’s attacks on working men and women has put every employee in the state on edge, especially those employed in public service positions. Even so, State employees show up every day to continue to provide the valuable services that our citizens need. This was truly on display when State of Illinois employees were on the front lines during record flooding in southern Illinois while Governor Rauner was on Christmas vacation.

“Governor Rauner should tell his negotiating team to get back to the table and work this out with ASFCME” said President House. “Compromise and contract negotiations are not a zero sum game. Proposing extremes that leave no room for the other side is not a strategy that works. It has not worked with the legislature and it not working for the state of Illinois.”

The IDCCA is calling on Governor Rauner to return to the bargaining table with AFSCME Council 31 and work out an equitable contract for all sides involved.
