Trump’s ‘Taxpayer First’ Budget Would Hit Illinois Middle Class the Hardest
Illinois Congressional Republicans remain silent

Springfield, IL – Yesterday, Donald Trump’s Administration released what Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney called the ‘Taxpayer First’ budget. This budget includes massive cuts to programs that benefit middle class families in Illinois. These cuts include $600 billion to Medicaid, massive cuts to farm subsidies that Illinois farmers rely on, and cuts to federal student aid. Illinois Democratic County Chairmen’s Association President Doug House released the following statement:

“Every day, average Illinois families rely on federal programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Donald Trump has now put those programs in his cross hairs with this farce of a budget. This budget makes it clear his true disdain for working class Americans.”

House added:

“How can Donald Trump look a southern Illinois farmer in the eye and tell them that it’s okay that he’s taking away their farm subsidies? How can he stand in front of students and tell them he believes in higher education while cutting federal student aid programs? How does he justify these cuts to the disabled widow who is living on a fixed income? These are real people and Trump is putting their lives in very real risk.”

Noticeably silent on these cuts has been the seven members of the Illinois Congressional Republican delegation. President House said:

“Illinois Congressional Republicans need to let their constituents know how they feel about the cuts in this budget. Voters have a right to know if their Congressman thinks it’s a good idea to dramatically cut programs that voters in their districts rely on.”
